Washington DC’s chief of police has resigned, weeks after two National Guard soldiers were shot by an Afghan national while on patrol there.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Monday that Police Chief Pamela A. Smith will be stepping down.

“Chief Smith dramatically drove down violent crime, drove down the homicide rate to its lowest levels in eight years, and helped us restore a sense of safety and accountability in our neighborhoods,” she said.

Bowser did not give a reason for Smith’s departure.

Smith, however, told Fox that she’s resigning to spend more time with her family.

“After 28 years in law enforcement, I have been going nonstop.”

“We met some challenges in August of this year with the federal surge and the executive order with regards to the crime emergency. But what I will say is that Mayor Muriel Bowser did a fantastic job leading us through those efforts.”

Washington DC was the first target of President Trump’s national crime crackdown, which involved flooding the city with federal agents and National Guard troops “to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.”

“We’re formally declaring a public safety emergency. This is an emergency. This is a tragic emergency, and it’s embarrassing,” Trump said.

“This city will no longer be a sanctuary for illegal alien criminals.

“We will have full, seamless, integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we’ll deploy officers across the district with an overwhelming presence.”

Hundreds have been arrested and serious-crime rates have plunged.

At the end of November, an Afghan national shot two National Guard soldiers on patrol in the capital, killing one of them.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the alleged shooter, worked with US forces in his native Afghanistan, before entering the US as part of “Operation Allies Welcome,” President Biden’s plan to relocate Afghan allies to the US after the withdrawal in 2021.

Around 80,000 Afghans were relocated to the US.

In the weeks after the shooting, there has been significant scrutiny of the vetting process—or lack of one—used to screen Afghan nationals for relocation.

More than 5,000 Afghans who were relocated were flagged as “national security” threats, data from the Department of Homeland Security reveal.

The data show that 6,868 were identified with “potential derogatory information,” after entering the US as part of Operation Allies Welcome.

Of that total, 5,005 were flagged as a potential national-security threat. Just under a thousand were flagged as “public safety” threats and 876 were flagged for fraud.
