Chuck Grassley, said in a response letter to an undisclosed recipient that he has opposed efforts by Democrats to “federalize elections in order to undermine election integrity,” chiefly the For the People Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. The letter was written as a response to an unknown individual about their “concerns regarding election integrity.” Grassley’s letter stated that he firmly supports voter ID legislation, but that state governments have the primary responsibility of enacting such legislation.
Despite this, one sentence was taken out of context by several conservative media figures, misconstruing Grassley’s position on the Republican-backed SAVE Act, a bill that would require documented proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections – an act the letter did not even mention. The misrepresentation of Grassley’s letter even made its way to Trump’s Truth Social account.
Below is a screenshot of the Senator’s letter. Note that the recipient’s name is blacked out, and one sentence is highlighted – the sentence that is being taken out of context in order to claim Grassley is opposed to federal voter ID laws.

Grassley clarified on Wednesday that he is NOT opposed to the SAVE Act, albeit in a very sloppily written social media post:
Dont believe everything u read on the internet Im not opposed 2 SAVE Act In fact Ive been fighting alongside Iowa Scty of State Pate 2hold Biden admin accountable for their hiding immigration/citizenship voter data in 2024 election ELECTIONS MUST B SECURE W ONLY CITIZENS VOTING
On Wednesday Mike Lee also issued a correction post, explaining that Grassley was not opposed to the SAVE Act.
Before the situation got clarified Wednesday morning however, President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account reposted an X post by Mike Lee quoting Scott Presler.

The initial Tuesday night post by Presler claimed Grassley would not support the SAVE Act:
BREAKING: Senator Grassley (R-IA) will NOT support the SAVE Act. Despite the fact that the U.S. Constitution clearly states that Congress may regulate elections, Senator Grassley wrote, “I do not believe that Iowa and other states need politicians in Washington, D.C. dictating and controlling how states run their elections.”
“92-year-old Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he will oppose federal legislation to mandate voter ID, saying he doesn’t think DC needs to interfere in elections despite widespread evidence of fraud in Democrat-run states,” AF Post reported Tuesday.
