Tim Houston, premier of the Canadian province Nova Scotia, announced that beginning Tuesday citizens are no longer allowed to enter the woods for hikes and other nature activities.

This means locals cannot drive their vehicles into nature areas or participate in hiking, fishing, or riding ATVs unless they want to receive a $25,000 fine.
People can still camp in designated campgrounds, but nearby trails are off limits under the new rules.
The move comes in response to 2023 wildfires that destroyed over 200 homes.
“Conditions continue to be extremely dry. Until we get a significant amount of rain, we’re at an elevated risk of wildfires,” Houston said. “Most wildfires are caused by human activity, so to reduce the risk, we’re keeping people out of the woods until conditions improve. I’m asking everyone to do the right thing – don’t light that campfire, stay out of the woods and protect our people and communities.”
The government restriction could last “for the rest of the summer.”
A permit must also now be obtained to engage in any forestry, mining and commercial activity on provincial Crown lands.
