Two previously-deported males convicted of heinous sexual crimes against minors were caught illegally crossing the border into South Texas, authorities say.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) just released information about separate incidents that unfolded two days apart in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV).
On July 12, U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents from Fort Brown Station caught 45-year-old David Antonio Varcenas-Aguilar near Brownsville.
The Mexican citizen was “previously arrested in June of 2009 and charged with sexual assault of a child,” CBP explained.
Varcenas-Aguilar was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
On July 14, Mateo Pablo-Martin was apprehended by USBP agents from McAllen Station.
In 2018, the 39-year-old citizen of Guatemala was convicted of molesting a victim under the age of 18 in Riverside, CA.
He was sentenced to 170 days in jail and 30 months probation.
“These arrests demonstrate our Border Patrol agents’ unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from dangerous individuals,” USBP RGV Sector Chief Gloria Chavez stated.
Last month, U.S. Border Patrol recorded just 6,070 apprehensions on the southern border and 8,039 nationwide, new historic lows.
In total, Customs and Border Protection reported only 25,243 encounters – the lowest number since the agency was formed in 2002.
