CBS Evening News surprisingly devoted air time to exposing widespread Covid-era fraud by many Somalis in Minnesota, who prosecutors say stole billions from the federal government and taxpayers.
A CBS News exclusive Thursday delved into the Somali network at the center of a billion-dollar fraud scheme, funneling taxpayer dollars from programs intended to feed children, help autistic kids and help those in need into their pockets.
“A honeymoon in the Maldives, a fleet of luxury cars. Here’s a box with more than $270,000 in cash. This was all evidence from a new trove of files obtained exclusively by CBS News, showing how a group of convicted Minnesota fraudsters spent taxpayer dollars,” a reporter states.
Overall prosecutors have netted 61 convictions, with 87 more charged, in what former U.S. Attorney Andy Luger called a “get-rich scheme.”
“One of the things we discovered is that a number of the people involved were buying investment property, resort property in Kenya,” Luger described to CBS.
President Donald Trump has addressed the fraudulent activity in the state on Truth Social, last month writing,
Minnesota, under Governor Waltz, is a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity. I am, as President of the United States, hereby terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS Program) for Somalis in Minnesota. Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER! President DJT
Trump has also labeled the Somali community as a whole “garbage,” and said he doesn’t want them in the country.
