Image Credit: Anadolu / Contributor / Getty Bulgaria will hold snap parliamentary elections, President Iliana Iotova has said. The announcement on Wednesday, February 18th paves the way for the country’s eighth vote in five years.
The decision follows massive protests in late 2025 that toppled the GERB government.
The demonstrations—which erupted over Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria’s (GERB) 2026 draft budget—accused the administration of masking widespread corruption. The political unrest comes amid a history of fragmented parliaments in Bulgaria, where frequent elections have failed to deliver stable governance.
President Iotova appointed senior central bank official Andrey Gyurov to form an interim government last week. Gyurov unveiled his caretaker cabinet on Wednesday, which will be sworn in by parliament. According to Iotova, the interim government’s main task is to ensure
fair, transparent, well-prepared and well-run elections.
The GERB party, which topped the previous 2024 electoral poll and formed a coalition, was forced from office after public dissatisfaction and street demonstrations.
Former president Rumen Radev—a critic of the government who supported the protests—resigned last month, leaving Iotova to assume presidential duties until elections are completed.
