A 17-year-old girl found unconscious in a Vienna apartment alongside four Syrian migrants on Sunday, June 15, is now in stable condition and no longer in an induced coma, according to Vienna General Hospital.

As first reported by Der Standard, the teenager was resuscitated at the scene by emergency services after one of the men called for help, and was later diagnosed with signs of a drug overdose and injuries to her body.

Due to the nature of the injuries, police say sexual assault cannot be ruled out. Investigations have been launched against the four men, all Syrian nationals between the ages of 21 and 35, on suspicion of rape.

Vienna police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger confirmed to the Austrian newspaper that all four suspects have denied any criminal behavior during questioning.

According to their statements, the men told police that they encountered the teenager on the street in Vienna’s Simmering district shortly before the emergency call and offered her a place to sleep.

No arrests have been made.

“At the moment, everything is still open,” Haßlinger stated. The authorities are currently analyzing the men’s mobile phones, and the public prosecutor’s office has yet to order any detentions.

The teenager, who lives with her family in Lower Austria, had been reported missing by her parents on Friday. She has reportedly previously come to the attention of police in connection with drug-related offenses.

Another Austrian news outlet, Krone, reported how the girl had previously confided in a friend two days before the incident that she had been raped in a bush. This was later relayed to the victim’s mother after she was treated by the emergency services.

It is not currently known whether this incident relates to the suspects in question.
