Two women in their thirties were hospitalized with stab wounds in Vaulx-en-Velin, near Lyon, on Tuesday evening after being attacked by an Afghan man whose romantic advances they had rejected, according to police sources.

As reported by Le Progrès, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Avenue des Canuts and quickly escalated into chaos as bystanders intervened.

According to witnesses, the man approached the women and, after being rebuffed, assaulted them with a knife, injuring one in the arm and the other in the thigh. Both women sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the hospital.

The attacker, described as an Afghan national in his forties riding a scooter, attempted to flee but was pursued by around 20 members of the public.

He was eventually caught, thrown to the ground, beaten, and was reportedly stabbed himself during the confrontation. Emergency services responded quickly and transported the suspect and both victims to hospital.

All three were in relatively serious condition but are expected to survive.

Local media reported that the suspect was legally residing in France and had no prior record with the justice system. He has since been placed in custody.

Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as investigations continue into the exact circumstances and the involvement of all parties present.
