Almost 20,000 Russian soldiers died in Ukraine last month, President Trump has claimed.
In a post on his social-media site Truth Social, Trump blasted the war as “ridiculous” and also highlighted Ukraine’s massive losses.
“I have just been informed that almost 20,000 Russian soldiers died this month in the ridiculous War with Ukraine. Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers since the beginning of the year. That is a lot of unnecessary DEATH!” Trump posted.
“Ukraine, however, has also suffered greatly. They have lost approximately 8,000 soldiers since January 1, 2025, and that number does not include their missing. Ukraine has also lost civilians, but in smaller numbers, as Russian rockets crash into Kyiv, and other Ukrainian locales.”
Trump went on to describe the conflict as “a War that should never have happened,” and said, “I’m just here to see if I can stop it!”
Reliable casualty figures for the war, now in its fourth year, are hard to come by.
At the beginning of July, Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed 100,000 Russian soldiers had been killed since January. And in September of last year, The Wall Street Journal estimated that the number of dead or wounded on both sides had exceeded one million.
Attempts by the Trump administration to bring an end to the war have so far been in vain.
Negotiations in Turkey between the belligerents have focused on prisoner exchanges, with Russia apparently refusing to discuss ceasefire terms.
President Trump’s frustrations with Russian President Vladimir Putin have increased in recent weeks, as Putin has intensified attacks against Ukraine, including missile attacks on the capital Kyiv.
On Thursday, President Trump called Putin’s actions “disgusting.”
Trump has also promised to impose secondary sanctions on countries buying natural resources from Russia.
