In a 6-3 decision, with Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissenting, SCOTUS stayed a lower federal court’s injunction and ruled Texas’ new maps were redrawn on a partisan basis, rather than by race, which is illegal.
The decision allows Texas to go into the 2026 midterms with newly redrawn district lines, adding five more likely Republican congressional seats. It also does away with Rep. Crockett’s 30th congressional district by incorporating deep red Tarrant County, as well as Rep. Green’s 9th district seat, which has been redrawn as Republican-leaning.
The high court’s decision marked a significant victory for President Donald Trump and Republicans keen on keeping Texas red, but it enraged Democrats on social media, with Rep. Crockett calling the ruling “disappointing,” but “not shocking” and claiming the GOP would regret the move.

Likewise, Rep. Green fumed on Facebook, “They fear my seniority. They fear my impeachment resolutions. They fear a voice that cannot be bought or bullied. They want to force me out. I promise you: I am not going anywhere.”
Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin raged, “Once again, the Supreme Court has given Trump exactly what he wants: a rigged, racially gerrymandered map to help Republicans avoid accountability in the midterms. It will backfire. The DNC stands committed to building power in Texas, no matter the maps in play.”

At the same time, Republicans took a victory lap, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott celebrating, “We won! Texas is officially—and legally—more red.”

The Supreme Court restored the congressional redistricting maps passed by Texas that add 5 more Republican seats.
The new maps better align our representation in D.C. with the values of Texas.

Essentially out of a job, Rep. Crockett has floated a Senate run that would pit her against Sen. John Cornyn (R). Meanwhile, Rep. Green has filed to run for the 18th congressional district seat, previously held by late Rep. Sylvester Turner (D), following through on a vow to run in the district where he resides.
