The lawyer who led two criminal investigations into President Trump during the Biden administration is now under investigation himself.
Jack Smith, who acted as special counsel for the investigation into President Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election, is now being investigated by the Hatch Act Unit, which investigates government employees who have engaged in political activities in violation of the Hatch Act.
The investigation into Smith was launched after Senator Tom Cotton wrote a letter this week claiming Smith acted in a blatantly political manner in order to undermine President Trump’s 2024 re-election bid.
“Jack Smith’s legal actions were nothing more than a tool for the Biden and Harris campaigns. This isn’t just unethical, it is very likely illegal campaign activity from a public office,” Cotton wrote.
“Many of Smith’s legal actions seem to have no rationale except for an attempt to affect the 2024 election results – actions that would violate federal law.”
“These actions were not standard, necessary, or justified,” Cotton added.
“They were the actions of a political actor masquerading as a public official.”
Speaking to The New York Post, Senator Cotton said he was grateful for the new investigation.
“I appreciate the Office of Special Counsel taking this seriously and launching an investigation into Jack Smith’s conduct. No one is above the law,” the senator said.
“Jack Smith’s actions were clearly driven to hurt President Trump’s election, and Smith should be held fully accountable.”
Smith was appointed as special counsel by Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland, and then resigned his post in January when President Trump returned to the White House.
