“We’re officially terminating Joe Biden’s ridiculously burdensome, horrible actually, CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards that impose expensive restrictions and all sorts of problems,” Trump said at an Oval Office press conference Wednesday.

Addressing the ease of restrictions, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy affirmed, “He gave me the directive to clear the regulations on this, which we have, and so if Toyota or any other company wants to make smaller, more affordable cars, fuel-efficient, we have cleared the deck so they can make them in America and sell them in America.”

The move sparked excitement across social media from Hilux enthusiasts, who hoped Trump’s elimination of CAFE regulations could bring back U.S. imports of the inexpensive light-duty pickup currently only available in other countries.

CAFE is why trucks are massive now
CAFE is why small cars have stupid complex engines
CAFE is why the Toyota Hilux can't be sold in the US https://t.co/8wa9vb5cyD

I was worried about the midterms, but then Trump legalized the Toyota Hilux in America, and we may never lose another election again.

The Toyota Hilux Champ has the potential to revive small American farms by being an affordable and capable truck. The type of farms with no need for a $90K half ton truck.#imports #AmericaFirst #cars #trucks pic.twitter.com/QVNROaZX21

Now I'm just speculating on pricing but I'm sure @Toyota is smart enough to make an American version of the Hilux Champ toโฆ pic.twitter.com/JZ3AYR87qf
On Friday, President Trump also declared he’d just approved inexpensive, fuel-efficient “TINY CARS,” like those built in Asia, to be built in America, instructing auto manufacturers to “START BUILDING THEM NOW!”

Meanwhile, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda last month came out as a huge Trump supporter, green-lighting a $912 million investment in American auto manufacturing over the next five years.

Trump is galvanizing the American economy by making cars and trucks affordable again, and highways could look very different a year from now.
