Us District Judge Rodney Smith issued the order in compliance with the recently passed Jeffrey Epstein Transparency Act, which requires the Department of Justice to release all of its information on Epstein.
The Act was signed into law last month by President Trump after wrangling and recriminations about its provisions. Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene resigned her seat, citing her disagreements with President Trump as one of the main reasons for her decision.
The law overrides all protections that had previously been put in place to prevent the release of the information.
Attorney General Pam Bondi will now have until 19 December to release the information.
The new order comes in the wake of news that Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate, will file a court petition challenging her detention. If that petition is successful, she will face a new trial.
Her lawyers have argued against releasing any grand-jury materials, because they could compromise her bid for freedom.
They said the materials’ release “would create undue prejudice so severe that it would foreclose the possibility of a fair retrial should Ms. Maxwell’s habeas petition succeed.”
Maxwell is currently serving 20 years in prison for her part in conspiring with and aiding Epstein in the abuse of underage girls.
After signing the Epstein Transparency Act into law, President Trump also called for an investigation into prominent Democrats and their associations with Epstein, such as former President Bill Clinton and Harvard President Larry Summers.
