During a press conference this week, DeSantis said he is not a an “AI exceptionalist,” and explained that there must be limits to the powers granted to tech companies.
He added that placing limits on these powers is in the “best interest” of both the state of Florida and the US.
“And so you do have this strain of thinking, which I think it’s—I call it AI exceptionalism, as if this is going to be something where, you know it’s going to solve every problem, and humans aren’t even going to be needed to do.”
De Santis went on to rubbish the utopian view that AI would allow everyone to “just sit around and play golf all day, and you’re going to get universal basic income” and all major disease would be cured. He said this situation is not only implausible, but also “raises huge concerns.”
“I think new technologies have to be developed in a way that aligns with American values—things like self-government, free speech, having a healthy labor force, federalism, and the rights of states and the creation and maintenance of strong families,” he continued.
“You want technologies that enhance our way of life, not supplant our way of life, and we will never, ever be able to credibly shed ourselves of our responsibility to think for ourselves.”
The main problem, according to DeSantis, is that Big Tech companies simply want to “maximize profits:” “the whole reason they’re doing it is to get a return on the investment.” He said these companies would always choose maximizing their profits over the welfare of humanity.
DeSantis is now proposing legislation that would “protect Floridians’ privacy, security, and quality of life.”
New laws include limits on the use of so-called “deepfakes,” rules against using Chinese AI, parental controls on AI materials and the use of chatbots, protections against the use of individuals’ data without their consent, and rules against the use of AI to adjust insurance claims.
DeSantis also said he wants to prevent taxpayers from footing the bill for expensive new AI data centers.
“We must put Floridians first!” DeSantis added.
