The tragedy unfolded at around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in the San Felipe Valley in San Diego County.
A Toyota truck reportedly driven by Brayan Josue Alva-Rodriguez, 25, attempted to pass a Ford truck towing a utility trailer when the Toyota collided head-on with a sedan traveling in the opposite direction, Fox 5 reports.
The Toyota truck then slammed into the Ford, rolled over, and burst into flames.
Five people in the sedan were rushed to hospitals in the region. They were identified as a 26-year-old male driver from Arizona, a 28-year-old woman, and three children ages 8, 5, and 4.
A 13-year-old in the Ford truck sustained minor injuries, while Alva-Rodriguez and his 24-year-old male passenger were also taken to hospitals with significant injuries.
Additionally, a firefighter was injured while extricating passengers from one of the vehicles.
An 8-year-old girl in the sedan succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.
While the crash is still under investigation, “alcohol is suspected to be a factor,” according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
“Impaired driving continues to take lives in our communities, and every one of those losses is preventable. Letâs stay committed to protecting lives,” stated CHP Captain Michael Monteagudo.
On Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that Alva-Rodriguez is an illegal alien under a final order of removal.
“Alva illegally entered the U.S. on Feb. 8, 2018, and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol in Calexico, California. He was served with a notice to appear before an immigration judge and released,” ICE San Diego stated.
“While in immigration proceedings, Alva was charged with two DUl’s on 09/06/2020 and 04/07/2021. On 03/16/2023 an immigration judge ordered him removed from the U.S., but Alva failed to leave the country as ordered.”
ICE is tracking the case and preparing to lodge a detainer against Alva-Rodriguez if and when he formally charged, although it is unclear if the request will be honored by authorities in the sanctuary state.
Illegal alien drivers have recently been arrested for killing at least two more 8-year-old girls in the U.S.
Elvin Ramos-Caballero, an illegal alien from Honduras, was also under a final order of removal when he allegedly ran over Mora Gerety, 8, as she crossed a residential street last month in Boise, Idaho.
Days later, ICE announced that a detainer had been lodged against Jose Alejandro Cuahuizo-Varela, an illegal alien who was being held by the DeKalb County Sheriffâs Office for a DUI crash in September that killed Maryah Johnson, 8.
