A mass shooting at a homecoming celebration in Leland, Mississippi, Friday left four people dead and a dozen people injured, with police still searching for a suspect.
The incident unfolded during an annual homecoming event held downtown, as Mayor John Lee told NPR, “An event like this has never happened in this city.”
In a statement to the Associated Press, state Sen. Derrick Simmons (D) described, “People were just congregating and having a good time in the downtown of Leland.”
The Democrat state senator wasted no time blaming guns for the shooting, claiming, “It’s just senseless gun violence…What we are experiencing now is just a proliferation of guns just being in circulation.”
The Guardian reports four people were “airlifted to the University of Mississippi medical center in Jackson in critical condition.”
The names and conditions of the victims were not disclosed as of Saturday afternoon.
Police have also not announced any suspects and are asking for the public’s help in identifying persons of interest, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation assisting in the case.
“FBI is aware and engaged regarding the shooting that occurred last night at a nightclub in Leland, Mississippi – we are mobilizing assets to assist local authorities in the case,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in an X update Saturday afternoon. “Please pray for the victims and their families. We will update as able.”
A separate homecoming shooting elsewhere in the state also left two dead, with a third shooting unfolding at a high school football game, the Guardian reports:
Around 200 miles (320km) to the south-east, in Heidelberg, another small town in Mississippi, police on Saturday were also investigating a shooting during the local school’s homecoming weekend there that left two people dead. Later there were reports that a third shooting had occurred, on Friday night, at the South Delta high school in Rolling Fork, just 40 miles south of Leland in the Mississippi delta, in Sharkey county.
In the latter case, Sharkey County sheriffs announced they arrested and charged two people with shooting outside of a local high school football game.
